Diagnosis, Treatment & Your Legal Rights

Though 80 percent of patients with mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos, only 10 percent of all of those exposed to the carcinogen develop mesothelioma. It has been believed that human mesothelioma cells are highly susceptible to infection by simian virus (SV)-40 in vitro and in animal models and often express virus sequences and that there is some symbiotic development path enabled by SV40. However, conflicting opinions do exist.

Other researchers state that studies reporting a high prevalence of SV40 DNA in human tumors have been based on molecular assays prone to false-positive results. Simply stated, they stated that the conclusions made by the first researchers are incorrect. Some medical experts believe that the SV40 DNA may have no role at all and that asbestos exposure is the most likely and most thoroughly established factor in individuals with this cancer.

In summary, although you expose ten people to asbestos in the workplace, only two or three may develop mesothelioma related cancers. Genetic susceptibility is also a contributing factor.

Treatment

There is no real consensus as to which treatment may be the most effective. Surgery is a common option, combined with chemotherapy and radiation. Others forego surgery as being too difficult or too risky given the benefits that can be gained from it.

Currently, palliative care has been more successful than attempts at curing or slowing the disease. Focusing on dyspnea and chest wall pain, the two major symptoms, and palliative care also includes radiation and surgery.

Regardless, treatment for the disease is expensive and mesothelioma-related cancer qualifies as a catastrophic illness. Lives can be turned upside down upon diagnosis, families bankrupted and victims of exposure pushed aside by major insurance companies.

Successful treatment hinges not only on medical know-how, but the legal expertise of a successful mesothelioma trial attorney or asbestos law firm that has the ability to recoup damages for the victims. Without the money to seek out treatment while maintaining a stable quality of life, a difficult situation becomes impossible.
