What is Mesothelioma?Mesothelioma is a relatively slow growing tumor that most commonly originates in the parietal pleura but can also arise in the abdomen and the tunica vaginalis. Diagnosis can be difficult in the early stages. At the time of first awareness, a thick rim of dense tumor encases and restricts the lung. In these cases, a small needle biopsy is inadequate and definitive biopsy must be made surgically. Once made there is tendency for the diagnosis to be met with a sense of hopelessness, due to the fact that this is a terminal disease. Survival from time of diagnosis generally is less than two years. In spite of these facts, victims of mesothelioma have more options than ever before when it comes to medical treatment and legal representation to recover damages. The OutlookIncidences of mesothelioma-related cancer in the US are rising, and it is estimated that between 2,500 and 10,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Some believe that malignant pleural mesothelioma has peaked in the United States; others believe its peak is still to come. The outlook for European countries is even worse, due to the fact that asbestos continued to be used abroad long after it was banned in the United States. Sadly, in Britain alone, there are more than 1,800 deaths annually. Globally, it is expected that more than 100,000 people currently infected with mesothelioma will die from it. |
